Transparency

Furtuna sources the vast majority of its ingredients, from its own responsibly-operated farm in Sicily, Italy. Complementary ingredients are sourced from responsibly-operated farms all over the world in accordance with Furtuna’s strict selection protocol. Furtuna is proactive at seeking the tools and partners that help them improve upon its existing efforts - Furtuna is EWG-verified, ECOCERT-organic certified, USDA-certified for accurate organic labelling and verified by The Good Face Project’s comprehensive ingredient ontology that analyzes product labels and screens every ingredient for toxicity levels. Furtuna provides thorough disclosure of ingredients on all product pages, as well as in its dedicated ingredient glossary page.

Emissions

Furtuna’s is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and is currently working to create environmental efficiencies along its supply chain primarily through its innovative farming and sourcing methods. These methods include wild foraging and a natural fertilization system based on bacteria. Another carbon reduction initiative by Furtuna is optimizing its packaging, I.e. using honeycomb paper padding instead of tissue paper or bubble wrap, and glass containers instead of plastic jars. As for the emissions that cannot be avoided, Furtuna offsets the carbon footprint of every order. Since 2020, Furtuna operates on a Solar Energy System - the photovoltaic park 18KW, which helps the brand yield a substantial amount of energy to run its medium-sized olive oil mill on the brand’s farm in Italy.

Water Management

Furtuna’s responsible sourcing practices and non-toxic formulas prevent pollution of our waterways.

Materials

Furtuna adheres to an uncompromising set of sourcing criteria - lands and ingredients must be irrigated by natural streams, soils must be untouched for at least 100 years, and the ecosystem must be virtually unaltered. The land must be 100% free of pesticides, surrounded by an approved buffer zone to protect against pesticide drift. The producers and growers must be artisans with a multigenerational heritage who are skilled in reviving old-world methods. This means nothing artificial is used in or on Furtuna’s botanicals, creating very low environmental impact. No synthetic pesticides, and no genetically-modified organisms (GMOs).

Workers’ Rights

Furtuna is committed to making sure that workers in its supply chain are treated with dignity and respect, and that they are compensated fairly. To that end, the brand operates in compliance with ILO standards for health and safety - and demands that all of its production partners operate accordingly.

Waste and Chemicals

All of Furtuna’s products are safely manufactured without the use of harmful ingredients and techniques. Furtuna has a strict no waste policy in place. From the olive tree alone, Furtuna uses the oil to make its ultra-nourishing base, the leaves to make antioxidant-rich olive leaf water and the pits to make a naturally exfoliating powder. Furthermore Furtuna’s wild-foraged botanicals create high-performance, concentrated formulas which require less usage by shoppers (than synthetic formulas). Thus minimizing consumption per bottle, which ultimately leads to a reduction in packaging created and used.

Animal Welfare

Furtuna Skin does not conduct, commission, or pay for any testing on animals for ingredients, formulations, or finished products. All of Furtuna’s products and ingredients are certified cruelty-free by PETA and Leaping Bunny-verified.

Biodiversity and Forestry

Furtuna is proactively working to preserve Sicily’s rich biodiversity. 70% of La Furtuna Estate falls within the Monti Sicani Biological Preserve, a strictly protected haven for rare, threatened, and valuable species. It is a resting and breeding place for different plants, birds, and other wildlife. Key contributions to the preservation of biodiversity by Furtuna include revitalizing previously endangered plant species such as the Biancolilla Centinara olive tree (“ancient white lilac”) through innovative conservation techniques.

Furtuna demonstrates a proactive approach to promoting responsible consumption amongst shoppers, driven by the notion that increased awareness of responsible sourcing methods is required to preserve ecosystems. Thus, Furtuna is committed to scaling its responsibility initiatives as the business grows. Lastly, the brand strives to promote a holistic approach to responsible consumption, including supporting sustainable development projects as it pertains to urban food insecurity, human rights, and racial injustice around the world.

Cruelty Free

Neither the finished product nor its ingredients are tested on animals, and adhere to standards for basic animal welfare set by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). All Toward Beauty products are cruelty free.
