Responsibility
Responsibility
Why do we assess animal welfare?
Every year, millions of animal products and byproducts are used in the fashion and beauty industries. However, there still exists a lack of sufficient regulation globally when it comes to sourcing materials and testing ingredients and formulas on animals.
The challenge
Many of the millions of animals that are used in fashion production suffer inadequate living conditions, brutal mutilations and chronic stress.
Investigating and documenting the treatment of animals throughout the supply chain is the first essential step to identifying and eradicating unethical treatment.
The goal
It’s vital that the industry at large accepts animal welfare as a core responsibility, and enforces the ethical treatment of animals as a basic requirement for suppliers.
Toward’s Approach
We expect all our brand partners to adhere to the 5 fundamental freedoms recommended by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), which sets the standards for basic animal welfare.
Some fashion and beauty businesses face challenges due to the use of animal-derived materials and ingredients in their manufacturing processes, and Toward supports these companies by helping them to enhance their traceability and responsible sourcing capabilities, taking a policy-based approach to the ethical treatment of animals along the supply chain. These measures are backed by a comprehensive assessment process.
